PITTSFIELD ROTARY CLUB           District 6460       January 3 & 10, 2007

Good news;  Chuck has seen the Dr… has a good operation scheduled that should alleviate the pain he’s been enduring… Way to go… Chuck!!! He also has asked for a volunteer to fill in as Secretary of OUR Rotary Club until he recovers from his current ailment…

OK Folks… come through as Rotarians….. Volunteer!!!! (we suspicion Mary does most of the work anyhow….)

Not so good:  Dorothy Fellhauer, former Rotarian here, fell, shattering the thigh bone above her new knee last Tuesday… tripped over a vacuum cleaner hose…. It has been repaired, but she’ll have to not put weight on that leg for two months… Dorothy is currently lodged in the University Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa… don’t have an address, but I called her, and she is very up-beat about the situation…319-356-1616….those who knew her might send a card… I’m sure that there’s only one University Hospital at Iowa City, IA

Apology:  Left my notes at Community Center on the 3rd….old age….

Request:   Suzanne Ellerbrock, President, Quincy Rotary Club has asked that any Rotarian, or Family member that can, ages 18-60, participate in their Rotary Club sponsored ‘Matchmakers of Hope bone marrow drive on February 3 at Blessing Hospital.

A swab of the mouth can identify the possible DNA match that could save a life of a person with blood cancer, where a transplant of healthy stem cells from donor CAN make the difference between living a normal life and dying… More than 747,000 Americans are living with blood cancer….

Stem cells are collected by either a bone marrow donation, or a peripheral blood stem cell donation, similar to donating platelets at a blood drive….

8:30-3…at Blessing’s Auditorium…Call 217-223-8400, ext 6960 to schedule an appointment….

It would be wonderful to be able to help another person live……

2 new Members:   Dan Long, owner of Brant’s Business Center and Gary Woods, Assistant Superintendent, Unit 10….. (hey, Both can sing!!)

Visitors:  Cliff Dolbeare, with Dad, Eric, and Jake Allen, Corn belt Bank, who has been proposed as a member….

Student Guests:  Kristie Pennock,  daughter of Doug and Diana. Participates in National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl, Swing Choir, Theatre, Band and Drum Major in it, Chorus, All-state Honors, and plans to attend Washington University or University of Illinois in Education.

Megan Laux, daughter of Clay and Rhonda Laux, says she would rather work than go to school…is in National Honor Society, dual enrollment in John Woods, and plans to go to Bradley University studying Physical Therapy.

Ray Syrcle, son of Rex and Ronda.  Presdent of the Student Council, in National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl, Jazz Band, Band, and on the golf team.  Plans to study Political Science, then possibly Law school.

Rex thanked Rotarians for their help in collecting items for the Christmas gifts o needy that the Student Council sponsored..

Program:  Harry Wright presented a abbreviated (for lack of time) program featuring two of our longer tenured Rotarians….Walter Lamb and John Teuscher….who spoke on their experiences in making up Rotary, and some of what they received from being Rotarians.

We have 10 Rotarians who have enjoyed and served Rotary for a total of over 402 years…. (It would be much more, if Ed House had not had to leave our club due to health).

January 10, 2007

Visitor:  Donna Smith, Guidance Counselor, West Pike, with our student guests:

Kelsey Barr, Daughter of April and Todd. She is studying business, a Cheerleader, plays volley ball, works with the Youth group at The Crossing, (in Quincy), enjoys swimming and homework, plans to attend SIU Edwardsville in Elementary Education

Logan Craddock, son of Diane (Mom just received her Nursing Degree…Congratulations, Dianne)He is on the Student Council, Year Book s staff, plans to attend SIU Edwardsville, studying education, wants to be a history teacher.

Dr. Doug Sloan, one of the outstanding ‘new’ Physicians in Pike County, was introduced as a visitor. (We haven’t had a Physician as a member since Dr. Tom Bunting moved to Arizona… where he became President of the Rotary Club in his town last year…..)

Program:   President  Ann introduced Kent Hawley, John Wood  Community College Pittsfield administrator, who also is President of the ‘Echo Pike’ organization.

Kent said he missed not being able to attend Rotary, the comradery and the fun we have.

Echo Pike proposes at have a Civic Fitness Center….that is needed in this area…they do NOT propose a gymnasium, since one is available at the Crossroads.

‘No matter what shape you are in, or how old you are, you can benefit from some form of exercise’….he says…..

The old shoe factory is in the process of being torn down….the new facility will cost an estimated 3 MILLION $$$..... but would be well worth it for the health of the residents of Pike County.

He passed out a very nice brochure, that covers all we need to currently know….when the old building is down, phase 2 will start…….
