Program: Connie Schroeder introduced Kathy Hull, who spoke on Habitat for Humanity. Purpose is to make decent shelter for people a matter of conscience.. A mixture of volunteer labor and donated funds and materials makes this a workable program. Housing, when completed, is actually paid for by the recipients, but NO interest is charged. There is a need for volunteers to actually work…but not all need to swing hammers…there is a lot of bookwork, grant writing, etc. that can be done. Families are selected by a fair, objective, non-discriminatory process. 300 ‘sweat equity hours are required by recipients…but these do not necessarily have to be on the house they will occupy. Hours can be applied to others’ homes. 10 percent of funds collected locally go toward 3rd world countries, to provide housing there. Prayer is a big part of assisting getting a project going, and continuing.. There is a challenge to Rotary to assist getting a project for Habitat for Humanity started here…. |
