PITTSFIELD ROTARY CLUB  5-23-07….District 6460

Johnson Stilwell is back!!! Glad to have him with us…..also Eldon (I always make-up when I miss) Atwood…..who sets the standard for us on making up…..

Dan Borrowman reported a ‘semi-total’ of over $8,500.00 turned in thus far for Rotary Radio Day….  He thanked all who helped out getting ready, as well as all who sold the ads….and those who actually participated at the radio station…(WBBA…in case you’ve forgotten)

President Ann Revis reported that her ‘swan song’, Rotary Annual Meeting, will be held at the Old Orchard Country Club on June 27, 2007, at 6:30 p.m.

Save the date and plan to attend…..say ‘good bye, good job to Ann, and ‘Hello, what you got up your sleeve for us in YOUR year, Randy (Digger) Hires’, our intrepid, incoming President…...for 2007/08……

MAKE-UPS NEEDED…..We had a really scant crowd this week, so make-up!!!!

Program:  Greg Carnes introduced Allan Motley of the Pike County Speed organization…

Allen says they have the fastest 1/6th of a mile dirt track in the U.S..   Quite a record for a town like Pittsfield.

They are having a very special race in July, which will attract racers from all over the United States.

The local track has been open 7 years..

On a regular basis, people come from 8-12 hours away to race3.  Only a few local regular racers take part, although they are increasing.   This is a family orientated sport…no alcohol is allowed in the stands or the pit areas.

Allen says he is in it as he has a passion for racing similar to that which others have for football, basket ball or baseball….(  he also likes WINNING…which does make it somewhat different. from being a CUB fan)……

Most of the drivers of these cars are 8-12 years old,  or in the 12-15 year old bracket….

He says that young people don’t hurt the next day from the rough wrecks like older people do….. and many of the car trailers cost $100,000.00, and the motor homes that pull them are often $150,000.00…. It is not a cheap sport… Cars only run about  $4,000.00 to $20,000.00+…..These are built by professionals, have a 4-stroke engine, and all are even in weight….car+ driver….at the starting line…..

Their big race for 2007 is the ‘Heartland Challenge’…July 12-13-14….It will pay $10,000.00to the winner….

Entries have already been made from California, Texas, Missouri and Illinois……

Come out and see it…it brings big bucks to the Pike County area……

Cost is just $6.00 / adult, $3.00/ youth and $2.00 for us cheap seniors……

They also have a great food provider there….
