Visiting
Rotarians: Joe Cook and Thommy Sanders, Visitors: Dan
Long, with Debbie Dugan; Paul Lyell, with Mark Meleski; and Lacy
Albrecht, Administrative Assistant to Senator
Demuzio. Carole
Bradshaw distributed the Rotary Radio Days materials to the team captains… It is
important to get all ads sold as quickly as possible, and to have
materials back to the committee members by the Wednesday of Color Drive Weekend…
(It takes about 2 days to finalize the various ads, type them up, sort and
process them…..and yes, they need extra help to do it…get ready to volunteer for
that… Note:
Special luncheon for older members….’How to Build Better Bones’ starts at 10:30
a.m. at the Program:
Debbie Dugan introduced Senator Deanna Demuzio….who is serving this area and
also running for re-election. Deanna
thanked us for her friendship…both old and new friends. She filled in
after her husband, Vince’s death, and then ran for a 2 year
term, which is now up. She felt that traveling with her husband for 30
years really equipped her to know what was going on in, and important to, the
people of this district. She travels
about 30,000 miles a year in the district, which has about 250,000 residents,
and it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to drive from her home to the furthest part
of the district. Deanna has
helped to support many projects in this district, and today will be giving a
check for $100,000 to the board of Old East School, so that the roof repair can
be accomplished to save the building from further damage….She also tries to
identify areas in the district that need
assistance. Some of the
problems identified are Poverty..... Under-insured pockets of people….The need
to try to increase job and educational opportunities. She recognizes that
we can’t help everyone…and has had a real lesson in what the Government can and
can’t do. She
recognized Rotarians as great volunteers…world wide…She stated that ‘knowing you
have helped somebody/done something worthwhile and gave of yourself… is so very
important. You get out of something what you put into
it… She is very
supportive of ethanol, flex-fuel and recognizes the need to get alternative
fuels to reduce the need for foreign oil. One large
problem facing all of us is the proposed electricity cost increase anticipated
to be 25 to 55 percent….She will work with other legislators to attempt to keep
the rates at the current level…. Board
meeting at noon at FSB….bring your own
lunch…. |
