Gregg Carnes led singing with Linda Bradshaw back playing the piano…It was GREAT!
Program: Gary Woods presented the fact that the IHSA is a Principal’s organization that most schools belong to in this state. He said that Best Teaching Practices state that if you want to get something across to people, repeat it at least 7 times….(you got that last week about programs)…He then introduced Don Bigley, Dean of Athletics and Football Coach.
Don told us that the IHSA has 870 member, is almost 100 years old, elects a board of directors who act as governing body. Schools do not have to belong, but cannot participate in tournaments if they do not.
Jr High is different. They have 2 different organizations.
IHSA says students MUST pass 4 classes a week in order to be eligible. Pikeland has 8 block teaching so there is a variation here.
IHSA sets rules for # of games that can be played in regular season. It’s rules state coaches can ,meet with students for only 25 days during the summer.
Steroid testing will be implemented in this area starting next year at the high school level.. How much, who pays is still open…He has not seen a problem in this area….
New sport for this next year is Bass Fishing…Some schools also have badminton and bowling…
The classification of sports designation is set based on previous year’s enrollment. This creates a problem in travel for many smaller schools…However, only 4 teams can go to the state tournament. Principals are always looking for ways to expand opportunities for students…..
Great information. We learned a lot about what’s going on in High School sports…and the IHSA organization ….
A separate sheet will be sent separately, due to additional information presented.
