                        PITTSFIELD ROTARY CLUB   5-28-08

Don Long reported a meeting on June 3 for helping decide the future of the Zoe Theater.  They hope to turn it back into a movie theater. There will be a clean-up on June 8.  They are looking for a place to temporarily store the theater seats,… just has to be dry….(got one???).

The Lions Club has invited Rotary to participate in the Pig Day Barbeque….Last year, Harry cooked the best ‘Ribs’, for the glory of the Rotary Club…also  got 3rd on the pork but and 5th on the brisket. That was against 12 teams from all over the West-central Illinois area…4 of which were professional teams…    IF some Rotarians could help, we can put on another winning performance….(or their SPOUSES).

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!  The Illinois Judges Association sent a ‘Thanks’ for the idea, proposed on our Rotary T-shirts, utilizing ‘The 7 Reasons for Leaving the Party’….motto, This will be3 used STATE-WIDE!!!

Walker Filbert (still a ‘Cubs’ fan…..) reported more information on the song “Take Me out to the Ballgame’…The author received a ‘Golden Pass’ to any major League game on the 50th anniversary of writing the song words.  The man who put the music to it, Albert Von Tilder (sp) was from Indiana…..(he will probably have more to say about baseball now that the Cubs had a winning streak…..)

Program:  Randy drafted a visiting Rotarian, Tony Crane, of the Quincy Club, who aw making a make-up here, and saved us from line dancing (promised by ‘El Supremo’ if we didn’t have a program…)

Tony is an Architect with Architectnics of Quincy, who have the contract as directors for the major project of the Salvation Army utilizing the Mc-Donalds-Kroch grant.

The Salvation Army is a non-denominational organization, based on an army model, founded originally in England.  The United States organization is divided up min to 3 territories.   Quincy is in the St. Louis district.

Ray Kroch, founder of the McDonalds chain, was a salesman of malt-mixers.  He met the McDonald brothers, bought them out and founded the corporation His widow, Joan Kroch set up a foundation and has distributed several billion dollars…and set up volumes of goals for the use of the money.

Quincy Salvation Army applied for the money, received originally 24 million,  ½ to be set aside for permanent up-keep.  Due to other areas not being able to make the ‘match’ money required, aht amount was increased to 40 million.

The new Salvation Army building at 5th  and Broadway will be a ‘Green’ building….and take up the whole block../

Excellent program.
