Pittsfield Rotary Club

Newsletter

August 27, 2008

Hello All Pittsfield Rotary Members –

In the absence of Harry Wright, I, Carole Bradshaw, am writing this newsletter from notes taken by Chuck Barber.

(Harry – I don’t know if I have a complete e-mail list of members, so please forward if you can.  By the way, get well soon so you can have your job back!)

Now down to business.

President Debbie Dugan welcomed everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Shirley Johnston led us in prayer.

Our song leader today was Gregg Carnes.

Announcements:

Debbie had Carole update us on Harry Wright.  He is having heart palpitations and also some infections.  Last weekend he had to go to Springfield twice, once in an ambulance and once in a helicopter.  However, he is home now and anxious to get back to going again.  (Update as of Wednesday night – Harry fell while trying to go to the County Board meeting.  He had to have stiches in his head).  Harry, you are in our thoughts and prayers – Please take care of yourself and get well soon!

Carole also reminded us that Fall Radio Days will be here soon.  She asked for volunteers for team leaders.  Ann Revis, Gary Woods and Chuck Barber volunteered.  We need four more team leaders.  Please volunteer or you might be drafted.

Our District Governor, Dick Passmore from Macomb will be visiting our club on September 13.  Please plan to attend that day.  We want a good showing.  Also, Debbie extended the challenge started by President Randy last year.  She will donate $100 to the Rotary Foundation for Every Rotarian, Every Year.  She asks all of you to join her in making your donation at this time.  This will be presented to DG Dick at our meeting.

Chuck announced that the 2010-2011 Rotary International President will be Ray Klinginsmith of Kirksville, Mo.  Ray has spoken at our club twice.  Once at our 50th Anniversary Celebration at the old Red Dome West and again at Eric Dolbeare’s installation as District Governor.  Ray will be the guest speaker at the Quincy Rotary Club on September 23 at Tony’s Old Place in Quincy.  Anyone wanting to attend should tell President Debbie.  Let’s have a good turnout from our club for this event.

President Debbie again welcomed Dr. Rob Mehl who was installed as a new member last week.

Program:

Our program chairman and also speaker was Phil Bradshaw.  Phil talked about his international experiences serving on the United Soybean Board and chairing several international committees, especially the WISHH Program.  This program (World Initiative for Soy Health) promotes soy products as protein in underdeveloped countries.  In many places, the local diet is protein deficient.  This has a direct impact on health.  Using soy as a supplement to diet improves the health and wellbeing of the populations of these countries. Rotary International is also partnering with the Soybean Association on this project.  Phil stated that to keep up with demand, we must produce more food in the United States in the next 50 years than was produced in the last 2000 years.
