We
Celebrated February Birthdays a week late....due to some obscure reason.. but
the Birthdeay Pie was delicious...
Program:
rotarian Chris Little, who has been associated with Fire Departments most of
his life, and now on the National Fire Fighters Council, rilled in when his
program didn't show upmdue to snow problems in Missouri.esides fighting fires.
Chris
reported on the dedicated Volunteers that protect our property, and lives, in
many ways.
There are
over a million fire fighters in the U.S....Over half are volunteers. of the
35,000 fire departments, 21,000 are volunteer departments such as we have in
Pike County. Volunteers have to have the same training as paid. 100 hours (orm3
semesters) to qualify as a volunteer. 120 hours of education if an EMT.
Some
Volunteer districts pay for the training, others have to do it themselves.
Chris is a
Certified Fire Instructor, which takes another 120hours of education.
It's
becoming hard to find volunteer. There has been a 10 percent loss in nthe past
2 years.
120 Fire
fighters lost their lives in 2008.. Half were volunteers. There has been a
re-testing program and those who took the training are now certified.
The new
requirements require 2 hours of trainingper month, plus more if an EMT.
It costs
$7,000.00 to equip a Firefighter. Barry Has donated their old equipment to JWCC
for theirfirefighting education department....Firetrucks cost from 120 to
400,000+, so new equipent is hard to come by. Barry Fire Department budget is
$30,000.00 per year, $16,000 of which goes for insurance. They had 280 calls
last year, 92 percent were EMT calls...the 1st responders, volunteer
firedepartment personnel, help before the ambulance people can arrive from
Pittsfield.
Pike County
has 10 Fire DSepartments and over 2oo volunteer firemen....quite a lot of whom
are getting older. need to encourage young people to volunteer....
