Thanks to all who helped, especially Kent Wasson and Julie Plattner for their
leadership. The kids reported tht they learned a lot about the future and that
they enjoyed the experience.
We have yet
to get a date for the GSE Team. The District Team Coordinator is supposed to
let Dan know.
The Rotary District
Assembly will be at Jacksonville. This is a Leadership Training and they would
like all Officers and committee heads to attend, if possible. You can pick up a
lot of ideas at this Assembly. It is April16. Please try to attend if at all
possible. It will be at the Gamble Center at MacMurry College.
Dan Mefford
was looking for a person to help a 40 year old man to learn to read. It was
referred to Diana Holt at JWCC, who is in charge of the learning to read
program at JWCC.
Program:
President Dan introduced Carla Morrisson, Librarian for Unit 10 High School.
Carla is a
product of JWCC, graduating in the very First Graduating Class in 1975.
She said
reading is very important in students lives. It is hard, however, to get and
keep books in a school library. Wear and tear is a problem...50 times out and a
book is very worn. Cost of books is going up and the amount of dollars
allocated is limited.
A new
program where authors write 'on-lin', and students have the opportunity to have
dialog with them , is a real opportunity to get students interested in both
reading and writing.
There are
2658 Fiction books at the HS library, an average of 450 are taken out in any
one day. 80 to 85 percent of these have been published in the past 5years.
The Covers
of a book have a great influence on whether a book is chosen. An interesting
cover will be picked in favor of an un-interesting one. 'Skinny' (thin) books
are favored over this ones....and sport and mystry books are favored over
others.
Carla reported
that the 'readers' furnished by Rotary are going to be very helpful to many
students who have trouble with small print in books.
The library
is always busy, since teachers still give reading assignments....
Thanks,
Carla, for informing us about the High School Library....
