ROTARY CLUB 3-23-2011
Dawson Dean
is back from Australia....Carole and Fred Bradshaw are off to India.....
Make sure
you see 'South Pacific', the HighSchool musical...it is truly a great
production..Rotarian Julie Boren's son, Spencer, is the Director, and has done
a magnificent job of getting a great cast together and performing.
Linda
Bradshaw was able to rouse Chuck Barber off of his chair to lead a rousing
singing this week.
May
13...Drug Prevention Day...Please hold this date to assist with this Rotary
Program.
Chris
Little, Fire Chief, reminded us of the April 16 program there in Barry for
getting license to carry concealed weapons. This is legal in 32 states, not
Illinois, and they can only have a limited amount of people. 76 showed up for
this in Pleasant Hill last week.
Program:
Julie Plattner introduced our speaker....(when you need a program, call
MOM!!!....) Elaine Hoaglin, accompanied by Jack Hull, who directs the Baseball
program in Pike County....(who also likes to eat lunch....)
Elaine said
Little League started in 1954, ith Rotarians Jean T. Casteel and Johnston
Stilwell among the organizers.
The kids got
coke and peanuts after the games... a food stand was needed. She thanked the
organizers for sponsoring the program, which not only allows the kids to play
ball, but also they learn sportsmanship and self respect.
In '76, she
started helping in the old concession stand, and it is quite a problem to keep
up and going. She has managed to keepit up for 34 years...(quite a record) and
enjoys being around the children and parents....(and watching the game when she
can...(She's a great peron to do this... Thanks, Elaine...)
Little
League can only have one fund raiser a year, and this will be Saturday, April
2, a Longaburger Basket Bingo, make sure you all, and your significant other,
show up to participate in this fund raiser...it takes money to pay the umpires,
run the lights, uy the balls.....the concession stand can only raise a limited
amount. Thanks for all your help.
Jack Hull
reminded us that Ray Davenport received Volunteer of the Year award from the
Pike County Chamber of Commerce for his volunteer work with the Boy Scouts,
Lion's Club and other groups.
The new
Concession Stand cost about $18,000.00, thanks to many volunteer help and local
construction people.
Last year,
over 600 participated in the varius ball activities.Training for coaches,
umpires, etc took a lot of time this winter, and in honor of the young man, Max
Zumwalt, who was killed last winter, who was a umpire for so many games, all
uniforms will have 'MAX' on their uniforms.
Jack
encouraged all who can to came to the games to encourage and support our you
ball players.
Really
informative program, Julie....grat move in bringing MOM....
Don't forget
the Mucical this weekend and the Basket Bingo fundraiser for Little League on
April 2...7:00 pm at the Legion Hall....
