Board Meeting held 11/1/2007

 

Present….Pres. Randy Hires, Sec. Chuck Barber, Tres. Roberta Dolbeare, Brandon Gerard, Anne Revis, Connie Schroder

Absent….Debbie Dugan, Jan Bleich, and Max Middendorf

 

Pres. Randy Hires called the meeting to order.

Minutes from September’s meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer’s report was given by Roberta

Roberta brought up that the Trail Program contacted her and were requesting the payment we had promised them.  None around the table could remember it coming before the board.

(Addendum) Following the meeting Chuck researched the subject further and found that it indeed did come before the board on June 1, 2006….Excerpt as follows “Pres. Elect Ann brought a request from Julie Boren regarding Pike County Trails project for Pike.  There is $20,000 available by grant but must have support of the community by letters of endorsement.  Ann moved we give $100.00 along with a letter of support.  Violet seconded the motion and it passed”.

 

Pres. Randy presented a request from the Chamber of Commerce for book racks.  Connie moved we give $200.00 to the Chamber for their use in such.  This was seconded by Brandon.  Motion carried.

 

Pres. Randy presented the Soy Cow Project to the board.  He and Eric Dolbeare had received a email from Phil Bradshaw as follows:

Albaro Bravo Morales attended our Soyfood Workshop at the University of Illinois National Soybean Research Laboratory last week.  He is the Rotarian from Guatemala Metropolis Club promoting the SoyCows.

Gentlemen,

 

I am composing this while on the road on the Ethiopian trip, and there might have been some progress on the Guatemalan project in the meantime, but I thought I would update you on the situation as of mid October

• Alvaro Bravo from Rotary Metropoli- Guatemala City spent a week in the U.S. with us at the Midwest soy Workshop and got lots of training on soy and the soy cow. Phil met with him and Catherine and our Latin American team did a lot of planning.
• January is estimated timetable for the installation of the first three machines (equipment funded thru joint project with Rotary Metropoli,,a Rotary in Hawaii we don't know and RI). WISHH will fund installation support performed by University of Illinois
• World Soy Foundation (WSF) has provided 20 tons of soybeans to "feed the cows" that Rotary is purchasing. Donation from farmers from North Dakota and Minnesota.
• Phil Bradshaw and Eric Dolbeare (former district governeor) are working the Illinois Rotaries for continued soycow purchase.
• Catherine has provisional budget and project proposals ready for distribution when we can get "access" to Rotarians and Rotary Clubs. We need to raise money not only for the machines themselves, but continued supply of soybeans, installation and product handling consultation trips, "business training" and soy product promotional materials for the organizations receiving the soycows, etc.

We would be happy to have a conference call to determine next steps. Thanks for your help on this!

Randy said he emailed Mr. Hershey about total costs for the project and hasn’t heard back yet.  Randy will have Phil do a presentation to the club regarding this.

 

Randy asked the board if they thought the club would actively support a “hands on” project like Habitat for Humanity.  Connie will try to get Kathie Hull back for a program ASAP.

(Addendum) President received this lickity split back from Connie….

 

I talked with Kathy Hull.  They have had the meeting with potential families.  Applications will come from this group and they hope to have a family picked by January.  The family then has to take a lot of classes to prepare for their commitment and they hope to have a Spring ’08 groundbreaking.  So…our “sweat equity” would be needed in the spring and summer of 2008.

 

They have donated land in Griggsville, Pittsfield, and Baylis. So depending on where the chosen family is from…that is where the house will be built.

 

 

Randy said he would try to get a hold of Becky McCartney to chair the Christmas Program again this year.  All agreed she did a great job last year and wanted to keep the same gift format (Giving to needy families instead of gifts to our own kids.)

 

 

 

Meeting adjourned and a Po Go Stick Contest was held with Chuck Barber declared winner by default. (Chuck was last to go…all those who went ahead were injured attempting)
